Posting Summary: The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Specialist. The position carries out research studies and assists in experiments for the laboratory of the Center for Cellular Transplantation directed by Kenneth L. Brayman, MD PhD. The role of this position is to perform and assist with studies investigating underlying mechanisms of type 1 diabetes and recurrence of diabetes in various murine models of diabetes. Responsibilities include working with mice, isolating islet cells, laboratory procedures such as flow cytometry, protein purification and chromatography techniques, immunoassays, tissue culture and assisting with collection and entry of data in electronic media. The Laboratory Specialist will assist with ongoing research projects as well as day-to-day lab activities. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, immunoglobulin purification, measuring mouse blood glucose levels, electrophoresis and western blot, mouse islet isolation and transplantation, DNA and RNA extractions, collection of tissue for histology, in vitro cell culture and in vivo experiments in mouse models of diabetes, immunoassays, isolation of nucleic acids from cells and animal tissues to make libraries for next-generation sequencing and ordering materials and supplies.
Qualified applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field, and experience working actively in a research laboratory. Experience in standard cell biology techniques and murine work preferred. Candidates must be able to perform routine laboratory data analysis and research procedures; independently prepare solutions and reagents; perform or learn to work with animal models; resolve problems and work accurately and with attention to detail. Must have ability to analyze and organize work procedures; plan and execute tasks or experiments; and interpret and report findings. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel is required. Additional expertise in statistical and data analysis software is a plus.
